Wait! That does not mean end of Windows XP!
This months Microsoft Patch Tuesday is as always an important Window Update for all versions of Windows (XP, Vista, and 7) and some other Microsoft software. Most computers that are set to update automatically will update tonight. Those of you who do your Windows updates manually should already be checking to see if they are available. It never hurts to check Windows Update to see if anything is available.
For a few of you, it could lead to a surprise next month when strangely there is no patch for your Windows XP. What is the whole story?
You need to make sure that if you use Windows XP you have updated it to XP Service Pack 3.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 will no longer receive updates. This is not really a problem as the update to Service Pack 3 is free, although it is a large download. As Windows XP has aged (and other versions of Windows too – there is a beta for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 currently available) Microsoft as released newer versions of XP with current security patches and fixes already in. These are called Service Packs. Windows XP Service Pack 3 has been out for quite a while now and most users should be updated to Service Pack 3 by now.
If you rely on automatic updates, there is a chance your not running Service Pack 3 yet.
I have seen a few cases where you needed to manually accept the Service Pack update on Windows Update.
There are two way to check if you have Windows XP Service Pack 3:
- See if the Service Pack appears as an option when you do a manual Windows Update.
- Open “My Computer” click on the “View system information” in the sidebar or just right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click on “Properties.” Your current Service Pack is listed in the General tap of the system properties.
If Service Pack 3 is not listed, you should start upgrading as soon as you can.
There are some places that need to wait to see if there any incompatibility between a new Service Pack and software before they upgrade. By now, nearly any incompatibility should be fixed so there should be no problems.
While I have talked quite a bit about Service Pack 3, remember this Patch Tuesday is for all service packs and versions of Windows. You need to make sure your computer is fully updated to help avoid malware infections. These patches help protect your computer and your date from exploits that are currently being used! Update Now!
